What is the NID?

The NID (Network Information Database) provides a means to synchronize account information across campus computer systems. Using the NID client tools, a system administrator can directly manage local system accounts and keep uids, mail aliases, account information and other critical information up to date.

How do I access the NID?

There are several ways to access and manage the NID database. We recommend using the provided NID Client Tools. If you wish to use your own tools, a nidlib library is provided in the distribution that contains the primitive system calls that the provided client tools use. Direct SQL access to the NID database is supported, as well as access via PERL and Java based SQL interfaces.

Current Status

The latest NID release is v1.6 which no longer accesses the problematic mtunid.nzvlogn view, and uses the mtunid.nzrlogn table directly instead. Special thanks to Administrative Computing Services for the assistance in getting this workaround, and permanent code change, in place quickly. There is only one release for Solaris that works on Solaris 2.51 and up.

The previous NID release was v1.5 which included export bug fixes, and removes the "summer, winter, fall, summer" term shortcuts that are not safe to use because of the Semester changeover. Separated builds were made for Solaris 2.51/2.6 and Solaris 7/8. If you have any questions regarding the NID, or the NID client tools, please contact Distributed Computing Services.
