Geology
The Remote Sensing Institute at Michigan
Tech offers a web information system about the hazards
of volcanic clouds. Volcanic clouds result from the
eruption of volcanic ash and gases into the upper
troposphere and stratosphere. They may remain in the
atmosphere for hours to weeks and are a serious hazard
to jet aircraft that have no onboard detection system
for volcanic clouds. MTU has provided leadership in
the interpretation of satellite-based remote sensing
for the purpose of mapping and measuring volcanic
clouds, and Internet2 will be a vital resource for
this task, because speed and high volume are both
needed.
