About
Internet2 @ MTU
Internet2
is a consortium being led by 205
universities working
in partnership with industry and government to develop
and deploy advanced network applications and technologies,
accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet.
Michigan Tech has been a member of the Internet2
consortium since 1999 when the National Science
Foundation awarded MTU a grant.
The
primary goals of Internet2:
*
Create a leading edge network capability for the national
research community
* Enable revolutionary Internet applications
* Ensure the rapid transfer of new network services
and applications to the broader Internet community
The
high-speed link has greatly enhanced research and
teaching capabilities at MTU, enabling high-end, communications-intensive
projects in areas such as videoconferencing, remote
instrumentation, data visualization, and access to
regional computer centers.
MTU
’s network directs traffic bound for other Internet2
locations to the Gigapop in Chicago and routes all
other traffic to the commodity Internet connection.
