Learning Technology

Information Technology offers videoconferencing and audio conferencing technology to the campus community, including Adobe Connect Pro and facilities in conference rooms throughout the MTU campus. We offer training and support in the usage of the campus conference rooms, their computer systems and A/V resources.

We support all PCs used for instruction in classrooms. Michigan Tech features over 40 classrooms equipped with instructional technology such as computers, projectors, document imagers, etc.

Audio-Video Systems

Audio-Visual Systems Engineering, Maintenance and Support

We repair and maintain university-owned audio-visual equipment. If available, an equivalent piece of equipment can be provided to a department while an item is being serviced. We provide audio-visual system integration engineering services for lecture halls, technology classrooms, and video conferencing.

Some of the events we provide services for include:

  • Commencement
  • Board of Control Meetings
  • Special Events

We also provide audio-visual system integration engineering services for lecture halls, technology classrooms, and video conferencing. These services include system design for audio-visual presentation rooms and videoconferencing which are comprised of:

  • needs assessment with the customer/department
  • infrastructure specifications (conduit/power requirements, etc.)
  • engineering the audio/visual system
  • specifying the audio/visual equipment
  • providing the system installation
  • user training

Studio Classroom Services

Our three studio classrooms feature remote-controlled cameras (including document cameras for display of handwritten material, three-dimensional objects, or visual aids), wireless microphones, and computer projection with annotation.

Studio Classroom Technology

We operate several online studio classrooms on campus. These facilities are used to record classes that are part of online or blended learning courses. Other uses include the recording and online delivery of campus events, including seminars, forums, and training sessions. The studio classrooms are staffed by production personal that operate the technology, allowing instructors or presenters to focus on teaching and learning.

The facilities feature remote controlled cameras (including document cameras for display of handwritten material, 3-dimensional objects, or visual aids), wireless microphones, and computer projection with annotation. Events can be recorded to DVD and encoded for online delivery.

Media Production and Duplication

Media Technology Services supports Michigan Tech's Online Learning (HuskyCast) technology. Other non-course events can also be recorded to DVD and encoded for online delivery. Other services include DVD transfers, CD/DVD duplications, video encoding and streaming, videotape duplication, location videotaping, and editing services.

Media Production Services for Studio Classrooms

Media Production supports Michigan Tech's Online Learning technology.  Staff operate the studio classrooms located in EERC B45 and Rekhi Hall G05/06. Classes taught in the studios are recorded and streamed to students enrolled in online sections.

Other services include DVD transfers, CD/DVD duplications, video encoding and streaming, videotape duplication, location videotaping, and editing services.

Media Duplication Services

A duplication service for many video and audio formats (see below) is available to university and local community members. We also provide video transfer services from tape to DVD. Please call for additional information. We cannot duplicate any copyrighted materials unless specific prior approval is received from the copyright holder or publisher.

High volume CD and DVD duplication services are also available, including full color on-disc printing. Please call for details and pricing information. Formats include:

Requests for duplications are normally completed within three working days. Supply costs are not included in service rates.

Instructional Technology

We support a number of instructional technology products and services.

HuskyCast

Captures class lectures and converts them into podcasts, video, rich media, and more for anytime, anywhere playback. Powered by Canvas, Echo360, iTunes U, Mediasite, and RealMedia HuskyCast delivers classroom lecture audio, video and screen/document recordings. HuskyCast is used for online courses as well as on-campus supplemental course content. Mediasite and RealMedia are used to stream videos for a select group of Michigan Tech courses with content previously recorded live in a studio classroom.

Classrooms equipped with lecture capture technology are Rekhi G09, Rekhi 214, MEEM 111, MEEM 402, MEEM 406, Dow 642, Library 242 and Meese 110.

Canvas Learning Management System

Canvas provides instructors and students with a web-based home for each of their courses. Course content and materials, including syllabi, lecture notes/slides, files and links to external sources, and audio-video content can be made available to students in a secure environment. Echo 360

Echo360 is the primary delivery method for HuskyCast. Echo360 delivers classroom lecture audio, video and screen/document recordings. Echo360 is used for online courses as well as on-campus supplemental course content. The full rich media playback delivers a high quality display window (i.e., document camera, computer screen) and high quality video window (i.e., in-room camera for Instructor or demonstration if available). Student Response System - iClicker

About iClickers

Michigan Tech has adopted a classroom response system to enhance the classroom learning experience. The system provides immediate feedback, encourages participation, and can assist with knowledge assessment. Many classrooms are equipped with a receiver to collect student iClicker responses. Please refer to the classroom directory. The receiver needs to be connected to a USB port of a PC or instructor's laptop. Instructors present a question and enable polling using the iClicker software. Each student responds by "clicking" the appropriate button for his or her choice. A wireless signal is sent from each responding clicker to the receiver. The receiver logs and stores the data of each student using the iClicker software. The instructor can then display response results in a graph, to the audience. The results are also available for later analysis, grading, and exporting to any grade book software or course management system.

Clicker Information for Michigan Tech students

When iClicker transmitters are needed for a course, they will be listed with the textbooks as required for the course. They will be found near the required textbooks and may be purchased from the Michigan Tech Campus Store. You only need to purchase a single clicker for all your courses. The same clicker can be used in different semesters. You should make a copy of the identification number on the back of the clicker and keep it in a safe place in case the number on the clicker itself becomes obscured. You will need to use the clicker identification number if you register your clicker on the iClicker website. Your instructors will provide information on registering your iClicker for the courses.

iClicker Information for Michigan Tech faculty

Instructors considering iClickers for use in class should contact User Services for an introduction to and demonstration of the system. User Services can provide instructors with a blue instructor remote and a loaner receiver to familiarize yourself with the technology. Most university-wide shared classrooms have an iClicker receiver installed. Contact User Services if one is not available in your classroom. iTunes U

Michigan Tech on iTunes U is a service that enables faculty to deliver pre-recorded audio/video course content using Apple's iTunes software. Students will be able to download or subscribe to this content as it becomes available. Once downloaded, they can use iTunes to play this media on their computer. Or, students can download their selections to an iPod, and study anytime, anywhere.

iTunes U is also used for on-demand viewing of previsouly recorded commencement ceremonies.

Download and install iTunes.

Once you have iTunes installed and running, you can launch Michigan Tech on iTunes U.

Mediasite

Mediasite is used for supplemental content for a select number of online and on-campus courses previously recorded live in a studio classroom. Panopto is used for online courses as well as on-campus supplemental course content. Playback using Panopto is available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices. A dedicated Panopto application is also available for iOS and Andrioid devices.
